Editorial note

Against a purple ground, the figure emerges through interrupted contours of face and body. Transitions between warm colours in the face and pale tones across the torso both define and dissolve its form. A light horizontal line through the lower section interrupts the body’s continuity and emphasises the image’s fragmented structure.
