About the artist
Ahmet Aydın Atmaca is a sculptor and academic based in Istanbul. Working primarily with the human figure, his practice explores deconstruction through the interplay of organic forms and constructivist structures.
He completed his BA in Sculpture at Anadolu University and his MFA in Sculpture at Marmara University, followed by a Proficiency in Art degree at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. He is a faculty member in the university’s Sculpture Department, where his research focuses on traces of Existentialism in modern and contemporary sculpture.
Artist’s statement
My sculptural practice is shaped within the field of tension between organic forms and architectural/constructive structures. I often approach the figure in a fragmented, diminished, or transmuted state. This approach serves as a sculptural expression of the compression, fracture, and alienation that contemporary life imposes on the individual.
By working with materials such as composite, rusted metal, and concrete, I aim not only to represent intellectual themes but to construct them through the material’s own resistance and memory. The erosions, fractures, and proliferating extensions on the surface point toward both the disruption of bodily integrity and the sedimentation of memory.
In my work, the figure often emerges as a being confined by the very structures it has built, seeking to redefine the boundaries of its existence. The process is as decisive as the result; fragments, remains, and intermediate states of transformation are integral to the production.
My practice establishes a space for reflection on fragility, memory, and transformation, situated between urban experience and existential tension.
