About the work
Grid investigates the relationship between chance-generated surfaces created through physical materials and algorithmic visual recognition systems. The work focuses on the differences in meaning that emerge between material reality and digital representation.
During the production process, soil, glue, printing ink, solvents, synthetic thinner, natural dyes, acrylic paint, watercolour and pigments are mixed in specific proportions and applied to the canvas. Through controlled interventions and unpredictable physical and chemical interactions, cracks, deposits, fluid formations and layered structures emerge, evoking views of Earth from space, planetary surfaces, satellite imagery and hypothetical planetary landscapes, including those of exoplanets.
The stages of formation are photographed and examined using Google’s reverse image search system. Related to the principles of Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR), this process matches images with existing digital imagery based on visual characteristics such as colour, texture, form and composition. These matches represent algorithmically identified visual similarities rather than scientific verification.
Screenshots of the search results are produced as C-prints, mounted between sheets of Plexiglas and exhibited alongside the original canvas.
Grid examines how images are identified, recontextualised and interpreted across different systems of knowledge, bringing the visual information generated through artistic intervention and chance processes into dialogue with algorithmic classification.
