Editorial note

A triumphal monument becomes a stage for play. Yellow façades, small doorways and children bring the city’s history into the scale of everyday life. The architecture initially appears familiar, yet the relationships between the buildings suggest a scene to be assembled and performed rather than a functioning city. Historical grandeur meets the fragility of a children’s game.

Artist’s statement

I made this drawing by imagining the Golden Gate, in its original form as a triumphal arch, standing at the centre of the city and within everyday life today. Since this historically impossible proposition is already an unattainable fantasy, the drawing itself becomes a non-functional puppet theatre and children’s performance.
