The artist’s approach

Büyükkan’s statement in Arkas’s New Lands catalogue places Nosce Te Ipsum after her 2016 A Beautiful Place to Die works. She connects the injunction “know thyself” to a perfect geometric cavity in an unsettling, unlocatable landscape: no figure appears, yet geometry makes human presence felt.

Editorial reading

Read in this context, the triangle registers the mind that measures and orders nature. The viewer is implicated in the intervention rather than safely outside it. Self-knowledge becomes a question of how humanity claims the authority to separate itself from nature and give it form.
