Editorial note

A coloured form opening across the dark surface evokes paper torn and curling backwards. White edges and red, yellow and olive tones create an illusion of volume that unsettles the flat plane. Black space reads both as the ground of the composition and as depth visible within its folds.

About the series

Doğançay’s Ribbons series draws on torn posters and layered paper encountered on urban walls. Curling, extended strips appear to project beyond the picture plane. This play of light and shadow translates everyday traces of the city into an abstract language.
